De IJzer

De IJzer is the only river on Belgian territory running directly into the North Sea and has a total length of 75 kilometres. The sources are near the North French town of Kassel on a height of 75 m above sea level.
At Roesbrugge - Haringe the IJzer flows into our country. The Kemmel stream and the Ieperlee are the two most important tributaries. The lower flow of the IJzer is canalised and navigable for ships up to 300 T. South of Diksmuide, near Lo and Pollinkhove, the IJzer reaches the flat polder country. On the territory of Sint-Joris, between the Unie Bridge and the small bay of Nieuwendamme, the IJzer canal was widened in 1979 because of the construction of a reservoir.
