In memory of the famous Father Ferdinand Verbiest (1623-1688), the 'Visitor Center Ferdinand Verbiest' opened in 2010. In 2023, the visitor center received a refresh in honor of the 400th anniversary. The visitor center is now known as the Ferdinand Verbiest Experience Center. Ferdinand Verbiest was a missionary, astronomer, engineer, and diplomat. He studied in Leuven and Mechelen and then went to Rome and Seville to study theology. In 1641, he joined the Jesuit order and traveled as a missionary to China. There, he contributed to the equipment of the Old Observatory in Beijing, which can still be admired today. Ferdinand Verbiest was partly responsible for the modification of the Chinese calendar, which was based on his astronomical observations. By the way, did you know that this resident of Pittem built the steam car and invented the thermometer? At the Experience Center, you can learn even more about the life story of Ferdinand Verbiest and his travels to China. Definitely worth a visit!
