Geology 2
The making of the different ceramics like terracotta, stoneware, tiles, ordinary and fireproof bricks, earthenware, china, requires different varieties of clay that are present in the deposits of Andenne. China and certain fireproof products need totally white clay (kaolin) that is rich in alumina. All this made the reputation of the “Derle” of Andenne.
The components of all ceramics are 3 in number:
• Plastic material (clay)
• Skimming agents (sand)
• Melting agents (lime)
As fast as the components become purer, we go over from common earthenware (fragile, opaque, dark) to the whitest porcelain (hard, crystalline, translucent). The ceramic production is classified following the properties of the shards, the used skimming agents, the melting agents, the enamels and of course the firing temperatures.
