Gavere

Gavere is a town and municipality in the Belgian province of East Flanders. Gavere is located on the Scheldt, between the cities of Ghent and Oudenaarde. The municipality has more than 12,000 inhabitants, who are called Gaverlingen.

Gavere is known for the Battle of Gavere, which was fought in 1453 between Duke Philip the Good of Burgundy and the Ghent citizens who revolted against high taxes.

In Boechaute, a hamlet in Dikkelvenne, the oldest entirely Dutch-language document has been found. The so-called schepenbrief is a notarial deed from the 13th century.

Emperor Charles V elevated the Land of Gavere to a principality in the 16th century. Lamoraal of Egmont became the first prince.

Gavere consists of six sub-municipalities. Asper is separated from the rest of the municipality by the Scheldt. Dikkelvenne, Gavere, Semmerzake, and to a slightly lesser extent Vurste are interconnected through ribbon development.

Within the municipality, there are also two large hamlets, Heedwijk and Sint-Janswijk.

In the sub-municipality of Semmerzake is located the military air traffic control center, which plays a very important role in NATO's Military Air Traffic Control.
