Kanne is sometimes too much for its residents as a gem to visit. The Limburg village, with a population of 1,200, is nestled between the Meuse River, the Albert Canal, and the Caestert Plateau. It is calm, and the green rolling hills in the chalk soil give it an idyllic character. Cyclists and hikers like to come here, especially on weekends and certainly when the sun is shining.
However, it has been clear for some time that all this tourism can also become a problem.
Here, the Limburg lever project “Cycling Underground” – a route through the marl caves – is being developed.
The grievances about the bike project are manifold. Visitors can disturb the bats in the marl caves, and the choice for accommodation tourism distorts the housing market. Moreover, there is a walking suspension bridge coming over the canal between Bassenge and Visé on the other side of the village. It is estimated that this will result in about 400,000 additional visitors per year.
