Gontrode is a village in the Belgian province of East Flanders and a district of Melle. It has nearly 1000 inhabitants. The oldest mention dates back to 980, as Rothen. This was derived from the Germanic "rothe," meaning cleared forest. In 1189, Guntroden is mentioned. The Saint Bavo's Abbey from Ghent owned the patronage rights of the church. The abbey also established the "Hof van Roden" as a reclamation center between the 9th and 11th centuries. Administratively, the area belonged to the Land of Rode.
