Linsmeau is derived from Lincent, the French name of Lijsem, with a Romance diminutive suffix. Linsmeel therefore means "Little Lijsem." The base form Lijsem itself is a Germanic name, composed of the root form Lindso + haima, meaning "dwelling of Lindso." The lordship of the village was established around the year 1000 and was located in the Duchy of Brabant. The various successive lords stayed at the local castle. In 1466, Linsmeel was burned down during the war between Burgundy and the Prince-Bishopric of Liège. During the Battle of Neerwinden in 1693, the castle and the church were looted.
