Brussegem is a place and district of Merchtem in the Belgian province of Flemish Brabant, about 10 km from Brussels. The patron saint of Brussegem is Saint Stephen. Brussegem was an independent municipality until the municipal reorganization of 1977. Brussegem has a very long history that dates back to the Frankish period when the village of Brussingaheim was founded. During the merger in 1977 with Merchtem, the hamlet of Oppem, which until then had been part of Brussegem, was separated and added to the municipality of Meise.
