Did you know that Kalken has something to do with witches! You can also find that link in the Herbs Path: Kalken, a part of Laarne, has a historical connection to witchcraft. In the early 17th century, during the period of witch hunts, several women and men were convicted as witches in both Laarne and Kalken.
An important historical figure in this story is Janne Callens, a midwife who was convicted at the age of 61 in 1607 and burned alive as a witch. She used herbs such as thorn apple, marjoram, and deadly nightshade in her work. Her tragic story illustrates how knowledge of herbs and medicine at that time could lead to accusations of witchcraft.
