For centuries, Baasrode made a living from inland shipping. The riverside village owed everything to its location along the tidal river Scheldt, exactly where the north-south direction turns into an east-west course. The village of the Scheldt was only one tide away from Antwerp and could develop into a inner port. From Baasrode, the rest of the shipping could be done in the next tide to Mechelen and Ghent. In addition, it benefited from the expensive shipping tolls levied in neighboring Dendermonde, which led to a years-long feud with this city. Until the nineteenth century, the village on the Scheldt was a thriving trading centre for shipping and shipbuilding.
