Jahrhunderte lang lebte Baasrode von der Binnenschifffahrt. Das Uferdorf verdankte alles seiner Lage am Gezeitenfluss Schelde, genau dort, wo die Nord-Süd-Richtung in einen Ost-West-Lauf übergeht. Das Scheldedorp lag nur eine Tidefahrt von Antwerpen entfernt und konnte sich zu einem Hinterhafen entwickeln. Von Baasrode aus konnte die restliche Schifffahrt in der nächsten Tide nach Mechelen und Gent erfolgen. Außerdem profitierte es von der hohen Schifffahrtsgebühr, die in der benachbarten Stadt Dendermonde erhoben wurde, was zu einem jahrelangen Streit mit dieser Stadt führte. Das Scheldedorp war bis ins neunzehnte Jahrhundert ein blühendes Handelszentrum für Schifffahrt und Schiffbau.
