The place name Oudenaarde consists of two parts. A first movement, the Germanic toponym 'ouden-', probably comes from alda or from alta, which means 'high'. The second part nature refers to a 'mooring place for ships' or to a 'mean meadow'. Earths lying on a river were at the same time suitable unloading places. You do not have to be a linguist to decide that Oudenaarde owes its name (and its location) to the Scheldt.
