Sankt-Vith has 3000 inhabitants, is not very big and has few old buildings. This is because out of the 596 houses that stood before the destruction in 1944, 563 were completely demolished. Only the Bücheltoren, a silent monument, has survived from the once proud city walls.
So you are driving through a nearly new town. Sankt-Vith is now a trade, tourism, and cultural center, located at a crossroads of important roads from the Eifel and the Ardennes. After Sankt-Vith, the Ardennes also disappear, the landscape becomes more rolling, less wooded, and the roads narrower.
