The Valley of the Zwarte Beek with the Zwarte Beek, which flows through the stream valley over a distance of 35 km from the source in Hechtel to the mouth of the Demer in Diest. With its 1407 hectares, the entire valley is one of the largest nature reserves in Flanders. Of these, 879 hectares have been recognised as nature reserves. The Valley of the Zwarte Beek spreads over the municipalities of Hechtel-Eksel, Houthalen-Helchteren, Beringen, Lummen, Halen and Diest. The nature reserves are located in various places along the stream with hiking areas set up in five places.
