In the middle of the forest is the Geuzentoren, a round tower built in iron sandstone. In 1864, builder M. Scribe probably allowed himself to be carried away by the 'follies' of the time to build bizarre, romantic outbuildings in English style. After an inspiring walk in the forest in 1888, Omer Wattez and his friend, the poet Pol De Mont, stood on the Geuzentoren admiring the landscape. And ever since Pol De Mont exclaimed: 'But that's the Flemish Ardennes here!', this became the pet name for the region.
