From here you have a view of the military airfield. Since 2018, a broad connection has been established between the airfield and the Maldegemveld nature reserve. The focus of the works is on the restoration and strengthening of heathland and the reconstruction of light-filled forest edges. This makes both the existing forest and heathland richer in plant and animal species, and of higher quality. In addition to its natural value, the experiential value will also increase. In 1953, during the height of the Cold War, NATO established an airfield to help repel potential attacks from the Soviet bloc. In doing so, 190 hectares of forest area were designated as military domain. Today, it is a non-active NATO base categorized as a reserve airfield of the Belgian Air Force. Nowadays, it is only used for recreational flying on weekends.
