This park is a real green lung in the heart of the municipality of Schaerbeek. It is part of a vast urban planning project that was launched at the end of the 19th century. The galloping urbanisation of the municipality at the time posed a real threat to the rural Josaphat valley, with the owners of the estates that made up the valley being tempted to convert their plots into building land. Not without difficulty, the municipality gradually acquired the land and converted it into a public promenade, which was inaugurated in 1904. Subsequently, Josaphat Park was gradually extended and developed by the landscape architect Edmond Galoppin, the works inspector for the municipality of Schaerbeek. The park is divided into three main parts: the historic English-style park, which is laid out around three ponds, the large lawns and the playground area with various sports facilities. It harmoniously complements avenue Louis Bertrand, which was laid out at the same time to replace the old main road of the hamlet of Schaerbeek, whose architectural heritage is definitely worth a visit.
