Sas van de Lieve

In the 13th century, the industry in Ghent is in full swing. The city is looking for a new connection to the sea and is granted permission to dig a new shipping canal to the Zwin in Damme. The excavation work for the Lieve runs from 1251 to 1269.
Until the beginning of the 17th century, the Lieve flows out beyond the city walls. But during the Twelve Years' Truce (1609-1621), the Spaniards decide to lead the canal within the walls. This is to prevent supply and drinking water provisions from being jeopardized during a siege. They construct a lock between the Lieve and the Zwin.
