Collegiate Church of Our Lady of Dinant

The church is located near the Meuse River, which sometimes overflows its banks, and is pressed against the rock, held in place with steel rods and solid mesh. The church deserves its prominent location in the city view dominated by the citadel.
It is a beautiful Gothic church that has often been beset by misfortune. Outside, the bulbous bell tower stands out. It was the subject of controversy during the reconstruction in 1924. The tower dates back to 1566. The proponents won the argument, although the fine craftsmen believed that such a finish did not suit a Gothic church. But, it was said, Dinant would no longer be Dinant without its bulb.
Outside, you can also admire the church portals. Inside, this church made of local limestone immediately gives a majestic impression and a subdued atmosphere thanks to the ambient music.
The large stained glass window is one of the largest in Europe and illustrates the story of salvation. Other stained glass windows tell the history of the city and the church. Some fascinating canvases highlight the church's history. Artist Antoine Wiertz, originally from Dinant, tells the story in an unexpected way. The work titled “We meet again in heaven” is dedicated to his parents. Furthermore, you can see beautiful wooden statues of Saint Lambert and Saint Materne at the back of the church.
