The Basilica of Notre-Dame is the former church of the priory of Basse-Wavre and still houses the Marian chapel. The building, with a Latin cross plan, is a Gothic construction. The nave consists of a central nave, a transept and a Gothic choir as well as a Baroque side nave added in 1659. A screen façade in the same style is affixed to the original one, formerly surmounted by a pediment. The church then rapidly deteriorated and was restored in 1709 and 1720.
It was a monastic sanctuary dependent on the Abbey of Affligem and a place of pilgrimage until 1797, when the priory of Basse-Wavre was suppressed and sold. Acquired by the second-hand clothes shops of Brussels, the building escaped destruction and was bought by P. Fr. X. de Biel. The church reopened in 1803 and a parish was created, making the monastic church a parish church. In 1999, the chapel was elevated to the rank of minor basilica.
