The Bay of Heist is a unique beach reserve for the Belgian coast. The area consists on one hand of embryonic dunes with extremely rare vegetation for our heavily frequented coast. On the other hand, the area consists of a floodplain with typical mudflat and salt marsh vegetation, such as Sea Aster, Sea Purslane, and Small Saltmarsh Cordgrass. These nutrient-rich silt grounds exert a great attraction on various waders and ducks. An observation hut provides a view of these marshes and mudflats. The low beach offers breeding opportunities for ground-nesting shorebirds such as the Ringed Plover and Kentish Plover.

- The reserve is freely accessible along the designated paths from early August to early April. During the breeding season (early April to early August), the low beach is closed to protect the nests of the breeding shorebirds.
