The Jahn Cave is located in the Klausberge in the northern part of the city of Halle, in the district of Giebichenstein, directly on the banks of the Saale River. Its formation is attributed to weathering processes and seepage effects along rock fissures in the porphyry that is exposed here.
The cave is named after Friedrich Ludwig Jahn, who later became known as Turnvater Jahn. During his student days in Halle, Jahn hid here for several days from other students. In the cave, Jahn wrote one of his first works, "On the Promotion of Patriotism in the Prussian Realm." After the Prussian defeat in the Battle of Jena and Auerstedt, Jahn was among the defenders of Halle. The story that he subsequently hid in the cave from the French troops is a legend and has not been confirmed.
