The Dender rises in Hainaut, crosses a large part of East Flanders and flows into the Scheldt near Dendermonde.
The Celts called the river 'Tanera' or 'Tanara', which means 'the turbulent, the bubbling one'.
The Dender, usually a quiet river, is 91% fed by rainwater. After a heavy rainfall, the water can rise quickly and flow fast, hence the name 'the effervescent'. In drier periods, the water is almost stagnant. Then you can compare the Dender to a series of lakes with stagnant water, separated from each other by locks and weirs.
Before the Second World War, barges were pulled further by animals or people. A path was created along the shore, the towpath. After all, towing a ship was called 'hunting'.
The towpaths are now ideal cycling and walking paths.
