In November 2010, the Dender region was severely affected by flooding. Also, the majority of the Provincial domain de Gavers was flooded. Natural waterways regularly overflow their banks in wet winters. The floodplains then serve as natural retention basins. In the past, humans have increasingly encroached upon the floodplains for agriculture, habitation, industry, and recreation, resulting in less storage space for water. The straightening of streams and rivers, along with the increase in hardened surfaces, also leads to accelerated drainage of rainwater. During heavy precipitation, this results in peak flows that often cause flooding. Through an integrated approach, the Flemish government aims to address the issues related to water nuisance. Firstly, rainfall must be retained on-site as much as possible. If necessary and possible, additional water retention is provided along the waterways. Despite all efforts, not all floods can be prevented. With the flood forecasting tool, the Flemish Environment Agency informs citizens and emergency services about the current and predicted conditions.
