Le Tilleul des Lognards

The Tilleul des Lognards is a remarkable tree that is an important landmark in the landscape. This lime tree is more than 400 years old. The name "des Lognards" comes from the fact that a number of mercenaries from the castle of Logne were hanged from this tree by the local farmers because they were thoroughly fed up with the constant looting. In front of the tree is an iron cross in a bluestone base with something peculiar going on: On the pedestal is the name Daniël Herman and the year 1771. That name and a different year also appear on another cross in the area, but this person is nowhere to be found in the archives. By the way, the iron cross bears a different date: 1767. The tree was also used to cure toothache: a coin was inserted between the crevices in the bark and that would make the pain disappear...
