Forward post bunker

Bunker constructed from reinforced concrete blocks belonging to the German Holland Stellung. The line was constructed during the period 1916-18 by the German army as they feared an Allied attack through neutral Netherlands. The Stellung runs from Knokke to Beveren and connects at Vrasene with the also German Stellung Antwerp, built in the same period. The bunkers in Evergem should be seen in light of the protection of the Ghent-Terneuzen Canal. At Eeklo (Strobrugge), the line split into a forward position line and a main line. The line was only very limitedly and locally used in a combat situation.
