From the Uniebrug you can today overlook the entire IJzerfront, all the way to the IJzertoren in Diksmuide. The Uniebrug is vital along with the Schoorbakkebrug and Tervatebrug (Stuivekenskerke). Whoever owns the bridges is in control of the IJzer.
When the situation becomes untenable, the Belgians blow up the bridge. Nevertheless, the Germans manage to cross the IJzer and take Sint-Joris. Fortunately, the flooding provides last-minute salvation.
Sint-Joris remains a German outpost for four years, right by the locks of Nieuwpoort, from where the Belgians maintain the flooding.
