In 2021, the watershed of Vesder and Maas endured a heavy amount of rainfall. But did you know that a scenario was proposed to blow up this dam in Mosin? At that time, restoration works were underway, and only 2 out of the 6 weirs were operational. The result was that at most 1800 m3 per second could pass through the weir. And more than 2000 m3 per second was forecasted. This could have been disastrous for Liège, which was located upstream. However, blowing up the dam would have been detrimental for Opeye and Herstal, which are located downstream. The flow rate actually rose to 3000 m3 per second. Nevertheless, the dam was left as is. The entire site was sacrificed for the dam, allowing more water to flow through.
