Lemonnier Passage

Description

This covered passage, linking the rue de l’Université to the Vinâve d’Île, was built according to the plans of L. D. Lemonnier and inaugurated in 1839, before being completely transformed in 1934 by architect H. Snyers in a modernist style tinged with Art Deco. Only the external neoclassical facades facing the rue de l’Université and the rue Lulay des Fèbvres remain from the original construction.
This complex consists of two slightly off-axis rectilinear galleries lined with shops. The intersection with the rue Lulay des Fèbvres is monumentalized by an ovoid dome supported by eight reinforced concrete ribs. It was originally composed of a filling of glass bricks, now replaced by blue mosaics. The abstract decor in golden mosaics and statues is due to Mr. Schoofs and bears the signature of H. Snyers in golden mosaics. The galleries are raised over two levels: shop windows and yellow marble wainscoting on the ground floor, rectangular openings on the first floor, plastered and painted, and Art Deco wrought iron doors. The original glass brick roof from Val-Saint-Lambert was replaced in the 1960s by a translucent superstructure.
Classified as a monument on December 15, 1988.
