Lambermont - Statue

In 1908, the round square at the intersection of Kasteelstraat and Leopold de Waelstraat was given its own name, named after the recently deceased baron F.A. Lambermont (1819-1905). He was secretary-general of Foreign Affairs, a position in which he was able to buy off the heavy toll on the Scheldt from the Netherlands in 1863. This historical event is a recurring theme in the South, translated into numerous street names and a number of large monuments. For the statue honoring Lambermont, a design competition was organized in 1910 by the Fédération des Associations Commerciales et Industrielles de Belgique. The designs were displayed in Brussels' Jubelpark. The eclectic, neobaroque design by sculptor Léandre Grandmoulin and architect F. Van Holder was executed. On August 14, 1912, a monumental sculpture was unveiled in Lambermontplein in the presence of King Albert and Queen Elisabeth in honor of Lambermont. The symbolism of the sculpture highlights the Scheldt and the buying off of the toll as important themes.
