Stone Bergmill

The Stenen Bergmolen in the Belgian municipality of Rijkevorsel is a working wind corn mill and the last of the Rijkevorsel mills. The current mill is the successor to a post mill from 1842 that burned down in the night of May 13 to 14, 1861. Near the location of the burned down mill, Josephus Brusselaers received authorization from the Permanent Deputation of the province to build a new stone mill. The builder of the structure was mason Jan Hoppenbrouwers-Mostmans. The mill has particularly many windows in the structure, as well as three access doors from the mill hill. During World War I, oil was temporarily extracted here, and around 1927 a diesel engine was installed in the mill for power. Until about 1960, professional milling was done here, lastly by Jan Van Opstal-De Koninck. Subsequently, the mill was rented out between 1966 and 1981 to a café and nightclub operator. During the 1970s, the sails were removed, and the decay of the mill increased. In 1996, the municipality of Rijkevorsel purchased the mill, and preparations for restoration were initiated. On April 13 and 14, 2002, the restored, working mill was officially put into service. Since then, it has been milled by five qualified volunteer millers. The Stenen Bergmolen was granted monument status on June 24, 1993.
