In Storms Strong

In Stormen Sterk, in the Belgian municipality of Lille, there is a windmill that has been operational again since 2014. The ground sailer was established in 1837 by miller Jan Frans De Backer after the previous mill, a post mill from 1499, was knocked down by a tornado on November 29, 1836. Stormen Sterk has been a protected monument since November 6, 1981. The wind catch has been severely disrupted by the surrounding buildings. The mill last operated in 2003. Its condition did not allow for operation afterwards. In 2006, the mill was purchased by Kempens Landschap and a thorough restoration was completed in 2014. The municipality of Lille has the mill on a long-term lease from the non-profit organization Kempens Landschap. A team of volunteer millers opens the mill to the public on the last Sunday of each month.
