De Liereman

The Liereman is a nature reserve located on the territory of the Belgian municipalities of Oud-Turnhout and Arendonk. The area also includes archaeological sites. The official name of the whole is Landschap De Liereman.Finds and excavations show that there has been a human presence in the area for a very long time, possibly as early as about 14,000 years ago. The first publications on this subject appeared in 1903 and 1905. These are sites at the locations "Bergstraat" in Oud-Turnhout and "Korhaan" in Arendonk, both of which are located on an elongated ridge of up to 3 km long. In Oud-Turnhout, 50,000 artefacts from the Federmesser culture were found in the course of the 19th century. They were found both on the surface, in podzol soils and in Usselo soil. These include stabs and scrapers in silex from the Stone Age, more specifically the Late Palaeolithic and Mesolithic.
