Did you know that the inhabitants of Walraversijde were known as formidable individuals? Besides their main activity of fishing, they were also active in capturing ships. In 1404, the inhabitants were begged not to attack English ships anymore. The towns and leaders of Flanders could not get a grip on these rough people. For merchant ships in the Canal, it was life-threatening at that time to sail to the Zwin or the Scheldt. To have some impact on these people and win them over, the Duke of Burgundy had the church of Walraversyde built with an extra tall tower.
