Castle Ter Motten

Thank you municipal office. Ter Motten was a Loons fief, located along the military road, next to the fief Houtissen, and presumably originating in the same period. There may have been a motte or older castle on the site of the current one. The oldest known lord is Willem de Rommershoven, mentioned in 1375. The fief has successively been in the hands of the families de Horpmael, de Papenhoven, de Waemes (around 1500), de Coursel, and since 1637 of the Liège family de Rosen, who received the lordly rights of Dilsen as a pledge from Prince-Bishop Louis de Berghes in 1723. Through marriage, the lordship came into the possession of the family de Saeren in 1784. The castle passed to the families van Aefferden and Moreau de Bellaing after 1863. In 1973, Renée Moreau de Bellaing sold the castle with the park to the municipality.
