The Ternaaien Canal is a short but important canal that connects the Albert Canal with the Meuse River in Klein-Ternaaien, Belgium. It is navigable for Class Va vessels.
There was friction between the Netherlands and Belgium as a result of the construction of the Juliana Canal and the refusal to extend it to the Belgian border. At that time, only ships of up to 450 tonnes could sail via a lock complex in Maastricht, via the Meuse to Liège and beyond, and that after many delays. In response, the Belgians built the Albert Canal, which considerably shortened the way to the sea, but required major works, such as the cutting of the Caestert Plateau. In 1939, the Albert Canal was inaugurated.
