After about fifty meters you will see the Brusselsesteenweg with the Zeekanaal behind it. Today, the Zeekanaal is a busy thoroughfare with the port of Brussels as its main destination. The main shiploads consist of fuels, scrap and building materials. But the Zeekanaal is also gaining in importance for tourists and recreation. You regularly see tourist ships passing by, a phenomenon of especially the last twenty years. And not only is ordinary touring and passenger shipping on the rise, education about water is also in the spotlight these days. For lovers of water sports there is the pleasure boating, downstream there is a real jet and water ski zone, while upstream many rowers squeeze their souls out of the body in the hope of one day achieving good competition results. On the banks, the facilities for cyclists and walkers are becoming increasingly attractive.
At the two stately swamp cypresses you turn left, so that you run parallel to the Brusselsesteenweg and the Brussels-Scheldt Sea Canal. From here you can see the pond completely. At the next fork, follow the main path on the left. On the right you see a tennis court. If you keep right at the crossroads and turn left a little further on, you will pass the changing rooms of the sports complex and you will be back at the place where the walk started. Through the first metal gate on the right, you come back to the parking (start of the walk).
The park Drie Fonteinen in the future...
The Three Fountains park will change drastically in the coming years. It has been since the seventies that consistent maintenance management has been carried out here. Until 2011, the Agency for Nature and Forest (ANB) will restore the park to its former glory. So the message is to come and see it regularly.
The works are carried out according to the principles of 'Harmonious Park Management' in which the manager takes into account human, historical, recreational, ecological and practical aspects.
Walking will certainly not be less fun as a result. For example, some paths (in a forest context) are unpaved, most paths have been given a stabilized permeable top layer so that joggers, walkers, strollers, wheelchair users,... always be able to enjoy the park safely. The natural values and the landscape experience remain intact. The city of Vilvoorde remains the owner of the whole. ANB received the area on lease to manage it.
