A rough estimate suggests that during World War I, both warring parties together deployed approximately one hundred thousand pigeons. This monument is in honor of those pigeons and the pigeon fanciers who perished. According to rough estimates, more than 100,000 pigeons were used in World War I, of which about 95% successfully delivered the message they were carrying. This high success rate was a result of two characteristics of the homing pigeon: on the one hand, that wonderful ability to always find its way back home (even if that home was moved), and on the other hand, the high flying speed. Even for a sharpshooter, it was not easy to take one out of the sky. Some birds of prey have less trouble with that. During the course of the war, falcons and hawks were also brought to the front to take down pigeons.
