The Fort of Brasschaat is a fort located in the municipality of Brasschaat. It was part of the Antwerp Defense Line and specifically the outer fortification belt surrounding the city of Antwerp.
The decision to create the Antwerp Defense Line was made with the choice of Antwerp as the National Redoubt in 1859. The idea behind this was that Antwerp was most suitable as a final refuge until the help of allies could arrive. The National Redoubt would consist of: a siege rampart, a fortification belt, and inundations. The fortification belt would consist of about eight Brialmont forts in an 18 km long belt from Wijnegem to Hoboken. After the Franco-Prussian War of 1870, it was initially decided to build three bridgehead forts and then to construct an outer fortification belt, which was farther from the city and adapted to more modern weapons. This last plan was ratified by law on March 30, 1906. This main defensive position included on the right bank 16 forts and 10 entrenched camps and on the left bank 5 forts and 2 entrenched camps. After the expropriation of the land, the fort was built between 1909 and 1912.
