Fort of Brasschaat
The Fort of Brasschaat, built between 1909 and 1912, is still a military domain and therefore not accessible. Until recently, it was used as a training ground, but it is now abandoned and a significant habitat for bats.
The fort is part of a European Special Protection Area and is located in a wooded area, ideal for walks along the hiking junction 7 of the 'Kempense Heide' network. In the 1970s, the Belgian army attempted to partially blow up the fort, but only the left wing was destroyed.
The fort is accessible via the Bredabaan (N1) and the Sionskloosterlaan.
