The fort was part of the outer ring of the defenses of Antwerp. During WWI, around 330 personnel served at the fort. The fort has never functioned as an active defensive structure. In the 1970s, the engineering corps of the Belgian army attempted to blow up the fort. This turned out to be a bit too big of a task, and part of it lies desolate now. The fort is still a military domain and is not accessible. Recently, it has been completely abandoned, and bats have found their home there.
