Westfront Nieuwpoort

Description

What do Nieuwpoort, Namur, Brussels, Antwerp, Ghent, Kortrijk, and Bruges have in common? Everywhere there is an equestrian statue of Albert I, the King-Soldier. The row of bronze riders marks the path of the German invasion of Belgium in 1914, which was halted at Nieuwpoort. This was achieved by the power of the seawater and the clever management of the sluices. But the water was not only an ally: it also condemned Nieuwpoort to the fate of being the first town on the Western Front and thus to ruthless destruction. A hundred years later, the King Albert I Memorial is a serene place in a vast landscape, surrounded by water on all sides. It is the perfect place to tell the story of the inundation. This is done in a hypermodern visitor center right under the 2500m² large terrace of the monument, with a multifunctional inner circle and 3 exhibition wings. The whole complex fittingly receives the name 'Westfront Nieuwpoort'. In an interactive computer game, you can operate the sluices of 1914 while overlooking the sluice complex as it is today. All of this and much more in an open, light construction from which you have a panoramic view of the battleground of yore.
