Massotais Hole

The Trou des Massotais is a body of water located on the Tailles plateau, near the Fraiture hut, one of the highest points in Belgium. It has been revealed to be an ancient gold mine, the first known in Belgium with certainty.

The presence of gold in the Ardennes has been known since at least the Gallic period. The region was located at the borders of the territories of the Eburones, Treveri, and Condruses. Evidence of exploitation can be identified on the Cambrian edge of the High Ardennes, extending from the Tailles plateau to the Malmedy area, passing through Vielsalm and Faymonville in particular. Tailings and excavation sites as well as nuggets can particularly be found south of the Tailles plateau and in Faymonville, where ancient mining dumps have long been identified, but possibly also further north at the Chefna or at Ninglinspo.
