On November 11, 2003, Dr. Paul Janssen died unexpectedly in Rome. A few days later, Mayor Marcel Hendrickx announced that, on the initiative of Janssen Pharmaceutica, a museum would be established in the former boarding school of the Sint-Victor Institute.
Originally, it was the intention to dedicate the museum entirely to Paul Janssen. But it soon became apparent that there was not enough exhibition material. After all, little has been preserved from Janssen Pharmaceutica's past. Fortunately, a solution comes from an unexpected source. The Sisters of Turnhout have an extensive collection of medical and nursing equipment that was collected by Sister Alena from 1988 onwards. This collection, which is owned by the OCMW Turnhout, was exhibited in the cellars of the monastery. But due to structural problems, another location had to be found. The OCMW was immediately willing to hand over this collection.
The Meduceum is divided into three floors. The basement is a symbol of the period when the hospital was located in the Warandestraat. Medical and nursing material from the time when Paul Janssen started his career as a young researcher is exhibited here. The first floor shows the period between 1957 and 1990, when the Sint-Elisabeth hospital was located in the Rubensstraat. Both floors contrast with the upper one, which is dedicated to Paul Janssen and his creations. In an interactive way, it shows how a medicine is created and various applications are presented.
