Take the Ardooiesteenweg towards Roeselare, enter the residential area at the height of Batavialaan. You are in the Batavia residential area. This neighborhood was already built in 1919 by the Service of Devastated Areas. It is the first garden suburb in Belgium. The leading engineer, Raphaël Verwilghen, applied the principles of the English garden cities and suburbs. Initially, they started with 100 houses, and in a later phase, another 100 houses were added. The first 100 houses correspond most closely to the principles of the English garden suburbs. Architect Doom, the later city architect of Roeselare, designed the first 50 houses in his typical reconstruction style, while the second 50 houses are the work of the Brussels modernist architects Pompe and Bodson, who were influenced by the English ‘Arts and Crafts movement’.
