Hoekakker

Hoekakker is a special area that reflects the structure of the surroundings well. The area forms a lower-lying zone between two extensions of the Kempen Plateau. On the higher extensions, the fort of Merksem and the center of Ekeren have developed, respectively. This is typical for the evolution of the Lowlands: the buildings are always located in the higher zones, while all lower areas have remained free of development. The low-lying nature of Hoekakker is associated with no less than three streams. The Laarsebeek, which is located to the south of the area. The Donksebeek, which was piped to the north of the area under the Prinshoeveweg. And finally, the Oudelandsebeek, which flows right through the area. All three streams flow towards the Scheldt, where until recently they ended up in the Verlegde Schijns. However, due to multiple floods, that water system was adjusted and the water danger has largely receded now. The presence of the streams ensured that Hoekakker has various soil types. The short succession of clay, loam, and sand is typical for the stream valley and is only found in a few places in Antwerp.
