The Blue Gate (Dovecote of Ooidonk Castle)
In the past, there were seven access gates around the Ooidonk castle domain. The Blue Gate or Porta arboreti is the only one that remains. The gate was presumably built in 1595. However, its current appearance can be dated around 1864.
The gate was constructed from Spanish brick. Sandstone was used at the corners. The attic of the entrance gate used to serve as the dovecote of the castle. However, the flight holes are no longer visible.
The gate was not the first dovecote of the castle. The original tower was located on the farmyard of Ooidonk. In 1579, the castle was destroyed, and the dovecote would also have been destroyed in the process.
