Nature reserve Bolderberg borders the noble domains Terlaemen and Vogelsanck. The area and the village are named after the eponymous Bolderberg, a witness hill that rises about 20 m above the surroundings between the valleys of the Laambeek in the north and those of the Bolderbergbeek in the south. While the Bolderberg remained afloat due to the abundant presence of iron sandstone, the softer surrounding land eroded. This hill was once given the name Barreberg, which means bare, arid mountain. On old maps such as the Ferraris map from around 1780 you can see this clearly. But not much remained of that baldness around 1990. There was plenty of Scots and Corsican pine planted for mining, exotics such as American oak and American bird cherry had also settled. Because nothing was done, the reforestation increased even more and not much remained of that bare, heather-covered mountain.
