Flaesheide

The Flaesheide is a 40-hectare nature reserve, managed by the Agency for Nature & Forest. The area consists of meadows, wood edges, several ponds, a piece of heath, and forest. This variety is certainly appreciated by amphibians such as the green frog, the alpine newt, the common newt, and the rare crested newt. The area is also very popular with many birds. It enjoys European protection as a Bird Directive area. In winter, you can see various migratory visitors here, such as the common sandpiper and the scaup. In summer, a colony of black-headed gulls resides here, which you can hear from afar. These gulls, in turn, protect other water and meadow birds such as the horned grebe, shoveler, garganey, little grebe, summer and winter teal, whimbrel, ruff, curlew, lapwing, black-tailed godwit, and oystercatcher... With their screeching and aggressive behavior, the black-headed gulls warn of birds of prey and foxes. To provide the birds with the necessary peace, the area is not accessible. However, you can observe them well with binoculars from the road.

Take a moment to pause on the benches and watch the Vlasroodloop that flows through the area and then merges into the Leyloop.
