Maenhoudthoeve

Protected as a Monument by M.B of 6/09/02. Historical polder farm with a hay barn, the so-called "Maenhoudthoeve," recently named after the last inhabitants of the farm. Located close to the canal, on the edge of the Nieuwe Zandvoorde and Oudenburg polder. Mentioned in a document from 1701; depicted on maps from 1741, 1754, 1776, and on the Ferraris map (1770-1778): as a farm with three detached components, included within the northern dike of the Plassendale-Nieuwpoort canal (1638-1641). Probably the largest depicted volume is the still existing hay barn. The existing farm is thereby protected against artificial flooding to prevent the silting up of the Ostend harbor. At the final draining of the polder around 1700, this dike was no longer necessary. By the end of the 18th century, the elevation disappeared, but it remained visible for a long time in the parcel structure and in remaining water pools north of the buildings. In its current composition, the farm is marked on the Atlas der Buurtwegen (1843); it has not undergone any major structural changes since then.
