When the Vennbahn came into the possession of Belgium from the border at Walheim in 1921, German exclaves were created. These became the subject of recurring bilateral negotiations between the neighboring countries. Five of the total six German islands outside the German border still exist today. The hamlet of Ruitzhof is one of these German exclaves or Belgian enclaves. Although there was often political quarrels over border issues, the inhabitants experienced few problems in their daily interactions with their neighbors "since they knew each other." Borders were something theoretical for them. Many felt uncomfortable at the thought of having to undergo border control when visiting family or friends in the same country, but that has been a thing of the past since 1995. Read more...
